    OMA/Progress BARBICAN CENTER Oct 6 / Feb 19

This autumn Barbican Art Gallery is transformed by an exhibition on OMA, one of the most influential architecture practices working today. Known for their daring and unconventional ideas and strangely beautiful buildings as much as their contagious obsession with the rapid pulse of living today, the work of OMA and its think tank AMO anticipates the architectural, engineering and cultural ideas transforming our material world.

    EJERCICIO T2_01+02+03 / PROJECT T2_01+02+03

The second semester will be developed around the specific approach to the city of Sao Paulo and will consist of several phases that will be amplified in the opposite scalar direction from that used in the first semester. This semester we will move from the urban scale to domestic scale. The tools we have been using in the first semester will serve as a complement to those to be developed in this 2nd semester. For those not having shared the first semester with us, there will be a few classes devoted to theoretical issues. The annual field trip is scheduled for the beginning of this semester, so that the student will see himself immersed in the social reality of Sao Paulo and will therefore be able to undertake the second semester of this ongoing experience with a clear idea of the working field firsthand. From this point, each student shall be able to produce a complete analysis and data mapping of the Paraisópolis favela working in groups of 2-3 people. Later on, those groups will propose a general reorganization of the favela through waterways. Ultimately, the student must choose between the sites already studied and agreed between all partners to develop a more specific program. Emphasis will be placed on the design of a hybrid structure that accommodates social housing units functioning as a system capable of extended residential growth without limits and capable as well of incorporating public spaces designed to mitigate the lack of common facilities (study rooms, libraries, market ...) depending on the needs that have been identified in the previous analysis.

    EJERCICIO T1_03 / PROJECT T1_03

The third project elaborates the central thematic preoccupations of the studio, incorporating a specific problem of Sao Paulo: the educational program. It is through the program of an elementary school where we find an excellent opportunity to convey to users not only pure knowledge that gives them pedagogical basics, but also and fundamentally, a means to learn the values that form the substrate of their culture, their landscape, and their society. These kinds of facilities may or may not assume the possibility of repetition or standardization. For the development of this elementary school, we will study two specific sites on the edge of two pools (storm water ponds) that are part of the flood control program developed by the government, a matter which will be the focus of the 2nd semester. Again, a series of case studies will enable the student to understand the different approaches and how these have been materialized in a specific situation.

    EJERCICIO T1_02 / PROJECT T1_02

At a larger scale, the second project will develop a single-family house based on the  concepts explored in the course and incorporating the experiences of the previous project through a bourgeois program that shall incorporate an element that stands as the core of many recreational opportunities: the swimming pool. Its location relative to the rest of the functions of the house will allow us to structure the building through a centrifugal movement of elements around the pool. The chosen site is located in the city of Sao Paulo and students must address this first phase of research in groups. As an introductory exercise, a number of houses will be allocated to each group of three students who will have to document, interpret, and represent (line drawings + model) these case studies and present them in class. In addition, this second project will incorporate a first approximation of certain environmental qualities unique to the city of Sao Paulo. The professor will propose the program and the site at the beginning of the course.

    PROYECTO T1_01 / PROJECT T1_01

The first project will constitute an initial approach to the haptic and poetic qualities of water and in particular, to an experience that nowadays has been detached and devoid of all the ceremony that still exists in other cultures: the bath. In a society where time has become the primary measure of our actions, the leisure rituals of bathing culture have been lost. Wet areas tend to be neglected and isolated from the rest of the house. In the short period of three weeks it will be necessary to project a "wet area" that will fully explore the development of a comprehensive, one-person experience of the bathing process, and its possible integration into the home. Models, collages and photos will provide the necessary information and experiential intentions for the project submission, avoiding any specific construction details or line drawings.

    About This Blog

This blog is a tool for sharing information related to the Studio Unit: exercises, clarifications, submission dates, grades and any other relevant information to follow during the academic year, which of course does not exempt the student from compulsory attendance to classes. It will also be a showcase presenting the most interesting student proposals that is, in the end the Unit’s own means to disseminate the process and the results of each exercise. Therefore, to reach a wider audience, including the invited professors, the most relevant posts will be published in English as well.
